Day 6 | Emotional Support

home :: help for wives :: the first 7 days

Hebrews 10:15 - Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Personal care with a professional counseling is very beneficial, but it is only one facet of the emotional support you need on your healing journey. Fellowship with other Christian sisters is vital. This journey can become a heavy burden, and even cause mild to severe depression. You must account for this and carve out time with your friends where you can simply enjoy their company.

Your husband, because of his addiction, has probably lost the ability to have genuine fun. His shame keeps him from truly enjoying life and his relationships. This is bound to have an effect on you over time. It can become exhausting to carry this weight of anxiety and dissatisfaction. Part of the process of healing is learning to enjoy life. Jesus shared such exciting news with us when he said, "I have come that [you] may have life, and have it abundantly." A healthy self is one who can have fun.

It is also important to be plugged into a good, Bible believing church where you can receive good teaching and enjoy fellowship. You don't always have to be talking about the struggle in your marriage to receive the healing balm your heart needs. God quite often speaks to our hearts in the normal flow of our daily lives - if we are listening. So, start perking up your ears to hear what God wants to say directly to your hurting heart.

Today’s Thought:

I recognize that I need friendships to help ease the burden of anxiety I carry. I will seek out some girlfriends who I can regularly get together with simply for the sake of having fun.

I choose to attend a Bible believing church where I can receive good teaching and fellowship. I will keep my eyes and ears open for what God wants to whisper to my heart today, even if it comes in an obscure manner or place.

Elaine's "Post-It"

Day 6

One of my best memories during that horrible time was when my relatives made homemade pizza and we watched the movie JACK. We just had fun and did not talk about the gunk in my life. So look for opportunities for "just fun."

Also, I was so worried about what people thought and I thought that no one else had faced this in their marriage. Years later I have met countless people hurt in like manner. And I have discovered that most people are more gracious than I thought in regards to my marriage problems. So, go ahead and open your heart to a few trusted people.
