February 2007 E-News: Why So Many Disappointments?February 2007 E-News: Why So Many Disappointments?
By Jonathan Daugherty

I had a colleague mention to me a study he recently read that found the average American is faced with roughly twenty disappointments each day. These disappointments can range in severity from getting caught at a red light on the way to work to finding out your spouse wants a divorce. His comment got me thinking about the very real truth that disappointment is a fact of life. I can't say it has been an entirely pleasant array of thoughts, but it was ultimately very encouraging. I hope you also will be encouraged by the lessons I am learning about the value of disappointments.

January 2007 E-News: A Call to CourageJanuary 2007 E-News: A Call to Courage
By Jonathan Daugherty

I don't make resolutions at the beginning of the year. Maybe it's my rebellious tendencies, or maybe I just got tired of making them and breaking them all the time. Whatever the case, I don't make them. However, I am going to challenge you (and, I suppose, myself) to do something this year that has the potential to change the world - literally.

December 2006 E-News: When Hope Was BornDecember 2006 E-News: When Hope Was Born
By Jonathan Daugherty

Christmas has always been my favorite time of year. Ever since I was a little boy I have felt the excited anticipation of Christmas day approaching. There were the traditions of church services, singing carols, drinking eggnog (non-alcoholic, of course), and lots and lots of wonderful food. The sights, the smells, the sounds – they all filled my heart with a sense of wonder and joy. And then there was the Baby.

November 2006 E-News: Embrace the Gift of PurityNovember 2006 E-News: Embrace the Gift of Purity
By Jonathan Daugherty

Do you see a life of purity as a gift? If not, you aren't alone. Many people view living a life of purity as a duty or obligation, a sort of back breaking burden they must endure. But this isn't how God wants us to see purity. He has a larger vision He wants us to embrace: purity as a gift.

October 2006 E-News: The Body Follows the MindOctober 2006 E-News: The Body Follows the Mind
By Jonathan Daugherty

The mind is an amazing thing. It is that intangible part of us where thoughts and ideas are held, and where decisions are made. In fact, every decision we make, whether good or bad, begins in the mind.

September 2006 E-News: Embracing ChaosSeptember 2006 E-News: Embracing Chaos
By Jonathan Daugherty

Life is FULL of disruption. Live for any amount of time on this planet and you will encounter circumstances that interrupt your life - whether positively or negatively. Disruption is a fact of life. So I wonder why so many of us walk through life with a chip on our shoulder expecting that life should be smooth and obstacle-free? Could it be we really don't understand the benefit of chaos?

August 2006 E-News: How to Manage Television TimeAugust 2006 E-News: How to Manage Television Time
By Jonathan Daugherty

-

Television, as with most technological advancements, has expanded our horizons for both good and evil. Through television we can share life-saving messages around the world in the blink of an eye. And through such technology we are made aware of many distinct and amazing cultures and people. Unfortunately, television also serves to distribute thousands of hours of hard core and soft core pornography directly into our living rooms.

July 2006 E-News: What if Grace is True?July 2006 E-News: What if Grace is True?
By Jonathan Daugherty

-

I read a book lately that has really solidified my faith. The book is Transforming Grace by Jerry Bridges (click here for more info). It is not the first book I have ever read on the topic of grace. In fact, I have read many books on the subject. But this is the first one that really made no apologies for God's grace. Most books on grace, even from solid evangelical Christian authors, attempt to include "disclaimers," making the reader beleive that it is grace that saves us but our own good works that keep us in such a state.

June 2006 E-News: Why Are We Here?June 2006 E-News: Why Are We Here?
By Jonathan Daugherty

-

I realize I am not the first person to ask the question Why are we here? But since there seem to be so few legitimate answers being given for such a query I thought I would toss my response into the fray. Actually, my response isn't original. The answer I am to propose has been around for centuries and was first expressed by the One who created the here.

May 2006 E-News: Why Perfection is NOT the GoalMay 2006 E-News: Why Perfection is NOT the Goal
By Jonathan Daugherty

-

I struggle with the "perfection model" of recovery. This model presumes that the goal of my work toward sexual sobriety is to achieve perfect behavior in my resistance of lustful temptations. It sounds like a solid model and one that would represent noble goals. But, in actuality, it isn't the model God has for us.

April 2006 E-News: Healing Damaged EmotionsApril 2006 E-News: Healing Damaged Emotions
By Jonathan Daugherty

-

What happens when your heart is wounded? It doesn't take long in life to experience disappointment, anger, fear, or pain. Life isn't easy and even the most well meaning people can hurt us. But how can we heal from the damage these wounds inflict on our emotions?

March 2006 E-News: Embrace DisciplineMarch 2006 E-News: Embrace Discipline
By Lynn Hampton Lacher

-

Have you ever focused on a runner’s face as he crosses the finish line? In one moment the sacrifice of hard training is surpassed by incredible joy. He has reached his goal. Does he stop at this point? No. Not only must he remain in shape for the next race, but he must train for different hardships the next race presents. To finish the next race he is ready to embrace discipline once more. The joy of accomplishment surpasses the cost of any sacrifice.

Well, here it is another new year! New beginnings, they say. New resolutions, many of which will be broken before the month is past.

Have you made any new year’s resolutions yet?

December 2005 E-News: Strong Finishers vs. Weak FinishersDecember 2005 E-News: Strong Finishers vs. Weak Finishers

-

I like to start stuff. There is something thrilling to me about rolling up my sleeves and attacking a new problem or opportunity. Some of this passion is just part of my personality, but I think much of it is a fundamental attribute of humanity. It is ingrained into our being. Simply put, we like to start new things.

November 2005 E-News: Let the Truth Be Told...November 2005 E-News: Let the Truth Be Told...

We live in a society in love with itself. Virtually everywhere you look you will find someone proclaiming that life is about your pleasure, your comfort, and your dreams. It has become such a familiar mantra in our culture that very few, if any, are questioning its validity. Even Christians are buying into such a philosophy; yet, with the ever so subtle spin that such pursuits are in line with "God's blessing" on them.
