“Daddy, would you turn on a nightlight? It’s too dark in my room!”
A small child, afraid of the darkness, anxiously cries out to her Daddy to give her a little bit of light so she can see that there is no danger. If she is no longer afraid of the dark then she will be able to go to sleep at night. It doesn’t take much light for that child to be able to see enough to feel secure once again.
It is amazing to me that just a small amount of light can enlighten a room full of darkness…
It is amazing to me that just a small amount of light can enlighten a room full of darkness… revealing hidden dangers. Where there is even a little bit of light, there is no darkness at all. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it” John 1:5.
There is evil and temptation and uncertainty in this world. Some of it I have participated in. Some of it I have observed or heard about. Much of it has affected me, directly or indirectly. When I am made aware of and surrounded by such sin, degradation, sorrow and seeming hopelessness, I can become afraid and anxious. But then I remind myself that I am NOT without hope. I am NOT without light. The Psalmist declared, “The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom then shall I fear?” Psalm 27:1.
In a dark, sinful world, Jesus, my Lord, declared, “I have come as light into the dark world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness” John 9:46 Jesus came to us to be the Light that we so desperately need. We are NOT left in the dark to fend for ourselves. The person who believes in Jesus, not just by head knowledge, but believing in Jesus with his heart, will NOT live in total darkness. We never walk in total darkness when Jesus is with us.
Why is light important? Light lets me see more clearly that which is around me so that I can be prepared for what may come and so that I can feel safe. In other words, light reveals truth.
I’m less likely to sin openly than in the dark.
Light also discourages me from being tempted to do some of the wrong things that I might be tempted to do in the darkness. I’m less likely to sin openly than in the dark. When Jesus, the Light of the world, is present in my life, I am much less likely to choose evil over righteousness.
Who do you trust the most but those people whom you know the most and know to be trustworthy and of integrity, right? Likewise, the more I get to know Jesus, the more light (truth) is shed on my life. The more I know Jesus, the more I can trust Him and rely on Him to lead the way. The more I know Jesus, the more peacefully I can live in this otherwise dark, tumultuous world.
I am so grateful, Lord Jesus, that you came to be the Light of my life! With You, I do not have to be fearful. The more I get to know you, the more confidently I can walk forward into the shadows of life! I want to know you more!
